Question: Why is my period 9 days late? What causes period 9 days late negative pregnancy test?

If you’ve waited for 7, 8 and now 9 days after your expected period date, and yet, you still have no signs of period coming, it’s normal that you will want quick answers.

Here’s an email I received from Maureen (one of my readers)

Hi Dunn,

I’ve missed my period for more than a week now and I need your help to know if I’m pregnant or not

I was supposed to get my period on the 17th of July, and this is nine days after and I have no signs at all.

I’ve taken four pregnancy test already, and it’s all negative. I did have sexual intercourse with a friend, but I used a condom.

Are there other reasons for nine days late period and not pregnant?

Just like Maureen, an absent period for 9 days can be troubling, especially if you’ve not planned for pregnancy

One common symptom of pregnancy is a missed period; so, if your period is yet to come, it’s possible that you may be pregnant.

Nevertheless, it could be due to something else (if you did not have unprotected sex). There are plenty of hormones that control the reproductive system (the pituitary, ovary, hypothalamus) and any action that cause a change in your hormone volume and secretion may interfere with your normal menstrual period.

Eating much more than normal, quick weight loss, weight gain, stressed out weeks or months, thyroid hormone problems, and perimenopause are common reasons your period could be delayed (when you are not pregnant).

This article explains the reasons for 9 days late period, when to worry and early sign of pregnancy you should know.

Why is period 9 days late?

If you’ve now waited for 9 days after an expected period, and yet, no period coming, here are the possible reasons your period is yet to start.

1.  Pregnancy

If you are nine days late on your period and you are yet to take a pregnancy test, I strongly advise you see a doctor and take a test right away. Also, there are many very reliable urine test strip that can detect pregnancy at this time.

Most women, after a missed period, will test positive for pregnancy. When pregnant, after unprotected sexual activity, Human chorionic gonadotropin, estrogen and progesterone hormones becomes elevated.

Estrogen and progesterone make sure your womb adjust to pregnancy and also prevent you from having a miscarriage while Human chorionic gonadotropin hormone will make it possible for conventional blood and urine tests to detect pregnancy.

Apart from a positive pregnancy test, other body signs may indicate you are already pregnant. They are

⇒ Sore breast

Even before period starts, some women usually get mild tightness in their breast. This pain usually resolves after the start of your period. If you’ve missed your period for 9 days, breast pain and swelling are simple ways to know you are pregnant.

During early pregnancy, your breast (like other parts of your body) are affected by elevated hormones (progesterone and estrogen) that make your breasts feel heavier than usual.

⇒ Food cravings

Suddenly, you are demanding much more food than usual. If you do, and your period is yet to come, it could be a sign that you are pregnant.

More than 50 percent of expectant mothers will experience food craving while pregnant.

⇒ You feel exhausted

If your period is delayed for 9 days and you feel too tired for normal activities, surely you will want to take a pregnancy test to confirm if you are pregnant or not.

Primarily, progesterone hormone can cause women to feel weak in the first trimester of pregnancy, and this happens because of decreased blood and sugar levels.

⇒ Nausea and vomiting

A lot of women will notice an unsettled stomach while pregnant, and if you do and your period is late, it’s possible you are pregnant.

Other pregnancy symptoms are spotting before missed period (implantation bleeding), headache, constipation, mood swing and feeling unwell.

What to do if period is nine days late?

These symptoms (swollen breast with pain, nausea, vomiting, exhaustion and missed period) are common in women that get pregnant.

So, if your period is late, it’s important you take a routine pregnancy test. At 9 days after missed period, it’s doubtful you will have a false negative result. If you are pregnant, see your doctor as soon as possible.

Period 9 days late negative pregnancy test

Sometimes, your delayed period will be due to other reasons other than pregnancy. If you’ve tested already and its negative, period 9 days late no pregnancy symptoms may be attributable to

1.  Stress

Your body typically changes when you undergo stressful situations for a long time. Heachache, body pains, emotional instability, acne and weight gain are effects of stress on your body.

A late period is also possible and occurs because other body systems like your heart, brain, and muscles get more blood flow than your reproductive system.

This guide explains how stress affects your period and ways to help get your system back on track

2.  Perimenopause

At an average of 51 years, women will stop seeing their monthly period. This is called menopause, and it’s a completely normal physiologic change that occurs in women.

Before menopause sets in, there are changes that you will notice in your breast, sexual activity, and your menstrual period.

You may notice that for some months your period disappears and shows up later. An irregular period with less bleeding is not abnormal. Other symptoms are dry vaginal while making love, lower abdominal pain, and hot flashes

3.  Thyroid disease

Thyroid hormones play many roles in your body, especially metabolism and normal function of body cells.

These hormones, produced by the thyroid gland, will also make changes to your reproductive system when excessive or less than normal.

A higher-than-normal thyroid hormone level (hyperthyroidism) will cause you to have less frequent menstruation.

Other causes of period 9 days late negative pregnancy test are hormone imbalance, birth control medications (including emergency pills like postinor), breastfeeding, excessive loss of weight and exercise.

Period 9 days late white discharge

Vaginal discharge due to pregnancy is clear, white and non-smelly. An excessive discharge in pregnancy is not abnormal and occurs because of estrogen hormone.

If you are 9 days late with cramps and heavy discharge, it could be a sign of pregnancy. Take a test ASAP.
