period 7 days late why

Period 7 days late could be a good thing or a problem depending if you’re pregnant or not.

Did you have unprotected intercourse weeks ago with symptoms like breast swelling, fatigue, nausea and breast pain?

If your period is 7 days late, you’re likely pregnant. However, stress, eating problems and severe weight loss could very well hold off period when due.

This article points out factors that delay your period for seven days.

Reasons your period is 7 days late

The normal menstrual cycle occurs every 21 to 35 days in women. If your period is regular and yet to come after 7 days, these are the possible causes:

1.  Pregnancy

It’s possible you tend not to feel strange signs of pregnant at the moment. Nevertheless, seven days late period, in many women, is most likely pregnancy.

Symptoms of pregnancy 7 days after your period are

  • Bleeding or spotting before your missed period that lasted for few days
  • Cramps before and after missed period
  • Increase in breast size with pain
  • Increased white vaginal discharge
  • Feeling like vomiting
  • Nipple itching
  • Increased urination
  • Brest swelling and soreness
  • Easily getting tired
  • Mood change

If you have these symptoms 7 days after period, then it’s likely you are pregnant.

You should get a first response pregnancy test kit to confirm pregnancy. If your period is 7 days late, first response kit can certainly diagnose pregnancy.

However, if negative, it may be due to wrong date of next period or due to other causes.

2.  You are stressed

Very stressful weeks and months can affect your body hormones, blood pressure, weight, blood sugar and your period.

Hormones like cortisol and GnRH (gonadotropin releasing hormone) are affected due to stress. GnRH hormone is produced by the hypothalamus. It’s secretion is reduced due to emotional or physical stress.

Decreased GnRH may cause reduced secretions of other hormones that regulate period.

You should certainly cut down your level of stress, regularly exercise or see a therapist.

3.  You are on contraceptives pills

Contraceptive pills, when taken continuously for months, inhibits ovulation and stop your period from coming.

How does contraceptive pills work?

Contraceptive pills work by maintaining blood concentration of estrogen and progesterone, thereby inhibiting hormones that cause ovulation.

If you’re on continuous COC pills like seasonale and seasonique, which are taken non-stop for 84 days, your period could be delayed for months.

Regular pills are taken for 21 days then a free 7 days period. If you are on active pill on your free days, it will delay your period from coming.

Nevertheless, your seven days past due period may possibly be as a result of pregnancy. This happens if you had missed your medications for days to weeks with unprotected intercourse.

4.  You have PCOS or POF

PCOS is an acronym for polycystic ovarian syndrome and occurs due to hormone imbalance. Most women with PCOS have irregular menstruation with abnormal distribution of hair similar to male hair pattern.

Other symptoms of Polycystic ovaries are

  • Light or heavy period
  • Increased body mass or weight gain
  • Difficulty getting pregnant
  • Acne

POF or premature ovarian failure occurs when ovarian follicles gets exhausted early before the age of menopause.

Symptoms of premature menopause are

  • Age less than 40 years
  • Hot flashes
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Decreased fertility
  • Absent period for months
  • Skipped period or irregular periods

5.  Perimenopause

If you are above 40 years with 7 days late period, its a sign you’re close to menopause.

Do you have irregular or skipped periods? Are you having reduced desire for intercourse?

Perimenopause are signs women experience before period finally stops. This occurs due to depleted follicles and low body estrogen.

Other symptoms are

  • Hot flashes
  • Change in behavior
  • Vaginal dryness with less sexual interest

6.  You’ve lost too much weight

Weight loss more than 10 percent of total body weight can delay period by affecting hypothalamic, pituitary and ovarian secretions of hormones that control period.

Dont panic yet..it’s very possible you’re not pregnant. However, the chance of getting pregnant on your ovulation day is high..
Should you still test negative, wait a week after and test again. Dont forget wrong techniques may give wrong results. So test in the morning before urinating..read the instrutions in the strip..

Are u trying to get your weight down fast with exercise? Any reason you got stressed out recently?

      Hope this helps

It’s July 16 and I was suppose to come on July 10 I’m very late still have not tested because I don’t want to get my hopes up high I have no signs of pregnancy just I believe real thirsty I had a little cramp in lower back just for a night. Wat should I do

    • Dr Dunn A. Reply

Hi Tweety, if you are already having cramps with back pain it’s a sign your period will start. Except you had an unprotected sexual intercourse, at your age (16), menstrual period can be irregular. You can wait an extra week and test if you are already seeing someone.

Today I am 7 days delayed of my menses and got a very faint poistive result in Pregnancy kit but it showed up after an hour… is it just the evap line?

    • Dr. Dunn A. Reply

Yes. it’s not an accurate result. Always follow your strip instructions. Usually, a faint line can show up after 10 minutes to hours.
However, it’s most likely pregnancy if faint line showed up within the time instructed in your strips

      Hope this helps.

Hello, I last had my period July 12, 2017, am currently going on seven days late on my period I’ve been having a lot of cramps this past seven days but no signs of my period at all. Two weeks ago I spotted and had cramps for only one day and then it went away. I had unprotected intercourse two days before my last period on July 10, 2017, and he came inside of me. I don’t have any pregnancy symptoms like nausea or anything like that its just cramps and no period, I’ve never been this late before. I took a home pregnancy test during my fifth day and it came out negative. Could it still be that I am pregnant?

Seven days late and still testing negative (and I’ve tried lots… dip test, clear blue, and first response. No way I am doing all of them wrong. Take first thing in the morning, follow all the instructions).

I cramped on the day of expected period, again two days later, and now on days 6 and 7. It is day 36 of this cycle which typically ranges between 24-29 days. Boobs are sore, stomach feels grumbly, discharge minimal. Joints feel stiff. Everything seems to point to pregnancy except the test! I do have endometriosis so ectopic pregnancy came to mind, but not consistent pain on one side, it’s both and it comes and goes, and zero spotting. Any ideas?

Hi- i am currently 7 days late, last period was 5/31-6/3. In the month of June I spotted twice after intercourse, had some discharge in that time. My period was due 6/31-7/1 and no signs of af. I spotted again today while wiping, haven’t had any spotting since. I took a cheap test and it was negative. Any ideas?
